THE PERFECT TAN: HOW TO OBTAIN AND PRESERVE IT AFTER THE HOLIDAYS
Let's dispel the myth: scrubs do not eliminate your tan but rather extend it! Dr. Maria Bucci, Nutridermatologist and member of the [ comfort zone ] scientific committee explains the reasons to us.
Tanning, especially in the Mediterranean culture, is synonymous of summer, vacation, happiness and health. We desire a nice-looking tan so much during the year that we would love to be able to keep it for as long as possible. “Preserving it” is unfortunately impossible but prolonging it can be an option with the right precautions before, during and after the exposure.
"Biologically", explains Dr. Maria Bucci, Nutridermatologist, "tanning is a defense phenomenon of the skin against the action of UV rays. Once exposed to the sun, the stratum corneum thickens, then starts cracking once the solar stimulation fails. To avoid this unaesthetic phase and to maintain a golden and uniform color, it is necessary to eliminate the dead cells laying on the surface of the skin with an exfoliating product that favors their detachment”.
From the words of the Dermatologist, we also learn that regular skin exfoliation is a useful and healthy practice that can bring several benefits: it stimulates cell turnover, deeply purifies the skin, prevents the onset of pimples and makes the skin more receptive to treatments and anti-aging after-sun cosmetics. Also, exfoliation allows greater penetration and therefore effectiveness of the soothing and nourishing active ingredients applied to it.
Scrub, Gommage or Peel?
Each type of skin, based on age and season, requires a specific exfoliating product. Let’s understand this better with Dr. Maria Bucci: "For younger, oilier and more resistant skins, I recommend using a gel scrub with thick silica or jojoba particles. This way, the light and non-occlusive base is combined with a mechanical action for immediate effectiveness. However, in case of dry or mature skin, which tends to be more dehydrated and sensitive, it is preferable to use a gommage or peel that act in a more profound and progressive manner".
Unlike the scrub, which has a mechanical action, the gommage has a creamy base that combines the renewal guaranteed by particular non-aggressive active ingredients with the benefits of a deep nourishment that helps preserving the skin’s barrier. Finally, for most sensitive skin types, it is ideal to choose enzymatic peelings that contain papain or bromelain: the enzymes act in a more delicate and progressive way, avoiding any possible irritations. Contrary to popular belief, exfoliating cosmetics do not decrease the intensity of the tan: by eliminating dead surface cells, they actually make our complexion stand out even more.
Facial exfoliation: when is the right time?
The best time to exfoliate your face is before and during sun exposure, twice a week. The [comfort zone] Essential Scrub for example, recommended by Monica Poli, Skin specialist, removes impurities and dead cells, making our skin more oxygenated and allowing better absorption of SPFs, ultimately ensuring a homogeneous tan. Similarly, a deep exfoliation at the end of summer improves the skin texture, ensuring softness and tone uniformity. What are the best products to use after the holidays? Opt for peelings that contain fruit acids and Vitamin C, such as the Sublime Skin Peel Pads, 2-3 times a week – applied strictly in the evening - and a retinol serum, such as /skin regimen/ 1.5 Retinol Booster, used daily in the evening after cleansing for more luminous and even skin. When using acids in general, always remember to protect your skin and apply a SPF in the morning, before applying the make-up.
Body exfoliation during and after the holidays: is it really useful?
For a golden tan and its maintenance after coming back from the holidays, it is ideal to choose a formulation that combines both mechanical and chemical actions in order to have immediate and prolonged results. Body Strategist Scrub, with fruit acids and jojoba spheres, promotes the detachment of keratinized cells, accelerates cell turnover and guarantees extremely soft and luminous skin.
